Chair Design Weekend with David Wolton and Isabelle Moore

Design and develop your lightweight seating design into a half scale 3D model.

Chair - David Wolton

Join designers David Wolton and Isabelle Moore for a weekend developing your own timber chair or stool design. Learn about racking, dynamic loading, stress factors and the flexibility necessary in components for a durable, comfortable seat. Over the weekend we will share our combined knowledge and experience of developing lightweight ergonomic chair structures in the studio and use either Frame or Windsor chair construction styles from which to build the chairs.

Design ideas will be developed through drawing and then each concept refined into a 3D structure using pre-prepared, small dimensioned softwood. These half scale models are invaluable for testing and evaluating the design concepts, and will aid integrating appropriate joinery into the full scale version and future development beyond the weekend. This design exploration is a springboard for progressing into full scale, load bearing prototypes and testing at a later date.

Those who are sufficiently confident with basic wood working to produce a 3D model (including students, architects, designer/makers and sculptors), and reasonably familiar with a workshop environment would benefit from this course. We will be working with a small bandsaw, cordless drills and hand tools to achieve your design, and some previous basic drawing skills would be helpful.

Bring your design ideas and sketches along for a fast paced, fun packed weekend or even (if you’re able) a chair that you find comfortable from which to transfer measurements.
