Chair Design Weekend with David Wolton & Isabelle Moore - What’s your seat height and tilt angle?

Design and develop your lightweight seating design into a half scale 3D model.

Chair prototypes - David Wolton

Join designers David Wolton and Isabelle Moore for a weekend developing your own timber chair or stool design. Learn about racking, dynamic loading, stress factors and the flexibility necessary in components for a durable, comfortable seat. Over the weekend we will share our combined knowledge and experience of developing lightweight ergonomic chair structures in the studio and use either a Frame or Windsor chair construction style from which to build your chair.

This design exploration is a springboard for confidently progressing your ideas through building, evaluation and modification. Designs can be developed initially through drawing and maybe a scale model, then constructed into a 3D structure using pre-prepped, small dimensioned softwood. Your full scale models will be invaluable for loading, testing and evaluating your design concept, and help integrating appropriate joinery into future development and the final version beyond the weekend.

Suitable for participants who are reasonably confident with basic wood working tools and techniques to produce a 3D model (including students, architects, designer/makers and sculptors), and reasonably familiar with a workshop environment. We will be working with a small bandsaw, cordless drills, chop saw and hand tools to achieve your design prototype, and some previous basic drawing skills would be helpful.

Bring your design ideas and sketches along for a fast paced, fun packed weekend or even (if you’re able), a chair that you find comfortable from which to transfer measurements and angles directly into your design.
