Steam Bent Tray in Ash
Get to grips with the fundamentals of steam bending to fabricate repeatable, curved components for your designs. Over the course of two consecutive weekends you will fabricate, pre-finish then assemble the component parts for a circular tray using green ash.
Please note: the timber used will differ from the image above.
The focus of our first two days together will concentrate on steam bending the tray sides, using pre-made two part moulds. This will offer the opportunity to discuss, demonstrate and experience many aspects of this technique first hand. Including: mould design & fabrication, compression bending straps, timber selection and drying.
During the second half of the course you will use a combination of hand tool skills and the router table to cut grooves for the tray base and shape the handle to fit, before sanding and finishing. You'll have a fabulous, functional tray to take home to use and the know-how to explore bending under your own steam.
This course offers the hand tool skills needed to build confidence and understanding to work with timber, with a maximum of four students for individual attention and sharing amongst the group. It covers the foundational knowledge and precision approach that underpins the craft of furniture making, skills that can be applied to your future workshop projects.
